Whether a dog is a fully trained service dog or still in training, the general rule is simple: do not touch or distract the dog.

Interacting with a working or training dog can disrupt their focus, interfere with their ability to respond to important cues, and potentially put their handler at risk. If you're unsure how to behave around a service dog team, here are the key do's and don'ts to guide your actions and ensure respectful, safe interactions.

Do's and don'ts.

  • Approach the handler first; speak to the handler when greeting a service dog team.
  • Ask the handler before petting the dog and follow the handler's instructions.
  • Be respectful of the dog and handler's space.
  • Keep your dog away from the service dog.
✕ Don'ts
  • Don't distract the dog; do not offer food, touch, or try to get the dog's attention.
  • Don't take photos without permission.
  • Don't assume a napping or resting service dog is off duty.
  • Don't be offended if the handler does not want to chat.
