Our Programs

Since its founding in 2000, Service Dogs of Virginia have placed over 125 service and facility dogs helping people with disabilities gain independence, security and peace of mind by being matched with an exceptional service dog.

We accept applications three times a year — in January, May, and August.

We Are Now Accepting Applicants For All Programs EXCEPT Autism Service Dogs.

Start The Application Process

  • We provide Autism Service Dogs for children (ages 2-10) and adults (18+)to offer safety, calming support, and greater independence.

  • Facility Dogs work in settings like schools, hospitals, courthouses, or counseling centers. They provide comfort, motivation, and social interaction to groups of people.

  • Our Medical Alert Dogs use scent detection to identify changes in body chemistry. We currently train dogs to alert to:

    • Type 1 Diabetes

    • adrenal insufficiency

    • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome


  • Physical assistance service dogs are partnered with adults (18+) who use power wheelchairs or scooters. They assist with daily tasks, increase independence, and reduce reliance on others.


  • Specially trained to help individuals manage anxiety, nightmares, and stress related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This program is available to:

    • Active-duty military

    • Veterans

    • First responders

Types of Dogs we Don’t Train

Please be aware that Service Dogs of Virginia does not train dogs for:

  • Guide work for individuals who are blind

  • Hearing alert for hearing impairments

  • Seizure alert or response

  • Balance support while walking

  • Allergy detection

  • Psychiatric service dogs

  • Personal protection, supervision, or safety from environmental hazards

  • Emotional comfort or social support only

  • Owner-trained service dogs
