physical assistance Service dogs

SDV trains Physical Assistance Dogs to help people with physical disabilities who use electric wheelchairs or scooters. These dogs help create greater freedom and independence.

*Please note SDV is currently not placing balance/mobility dogs at this time.

Physical Assistance Dogs are trained to provide support by helping with tasks that a person cannot do themselves, such as:

  • Opening and closing doors

  • Picking up and retrieving dropped objects

  • Place items in a person’s hands, on a surface, or in a basket

  • Removing socks and sweatshirts

  • Retrieving a cordless phone or cell phone

 Physical Assistance Applicant Criteria:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have physical disability, debilitating chronic illness, or a neurological disorder

  • Must use electric wheelchair or scooter

  • Be able to navigate their environment without the assistance of others

  • Must be physically and financially able to take full responsibility for the dog
