Why Volunteer?

Why we need more volunteers

Our waitlist is currently 1-2 years for individuals needing service dogs—including clients requiring successor dogs as their current partners retire.

The Challenge: We're not short on applicants—we're short on volunteers. To maintain training quality and keep our wait list at 1-2 years, we've had to close applications for certain programs. The number of dogs we can train is our limiting factor.

The Solution: More volunteers mean more dogs trained, shorter wait times, and the ability to reopen closed programs.

What You‘ll Gain

Make a Real Difference: Help individuals living with disabilities regain their independence through a life-changing service dog partnership.

Find Joy & Fulfillment: Experience the happiness of working with dogs daily while knowing you're giving someone hope and freedom.

Join Our Family: Meet fellow volunteers who share your values, build lasting friendships, and become part of something bigger than yourself.

Grow Your Skills: Gaindog training techniques, animal behavior knowledge, and strengthen your patience, communication, and leadership skills.

“Beyond the joy of raising a puppy, I've gained valuable knowledge from SDV’s expert trainers. Their guidance benefits both puppies and volunteers, but the greatest reward is knowing these dogs will provide life-changing service for years to come.”
