SDV Nitro: One Dog, Two Missions

If you follow us on social media, you already know — SDV Nitro was placed at the very beginning of April. And his story is unlike any we've told before. Nitro is pulling double duty, serving as both an autism service dog and a facility dog.

Late in 2024, Danielle, along with her parents Jennifer and Jerry, started the process of applying for a service dog. Danielle, a young adult on the autism spectrum, needed support — the kind that goes with you into a crowded store, a tough conversation, an overwhelming moment in public.

Jennifer, a special education teacher, also saw an opportunity. On the days the dog wasn't needed by Danielle, could he serve as a facility dog at her school? We loved the idea, but we knew it would take a very special dog to succeed in both roles. After the family was accepted and placed on the waitlist, we began searching for just the right dog—one capable of doing both jobs well.

And that dog was Nitro.

Nitro has a way about him. Calm without being distant. Engaged without being overwhelming. The kind of presence that settles a room just by walking into it.

In transfer camp, Danielle and her parents learned his cues, practiced on public and built their relationship together. Nitro went home with his new family in April after transfer camp was over.

When Danielle feels dis-regulated, Nitro leans in — a hug, a steady weight across her lap. What could spiral into a shutdown becomes manageable. The shopping trip gets finished. The family walk happens. The hard conversation gets had.

Jennifer says it simply: "We put him in position before anything challenging begins now. His presence alone keeps her calmer, more engaged, more willing."

And when Danielle doesn't need him, Nitro heads to school. The moment he walks through the door, something shifts. Students who are nervous around dogs find themselves inching closer. Kids who struggle to be kind to each other discover it comes naturally with Nitro — and the staff makes use of that. They point to a child's gentle hands on Nitro's fur and say: that's what we want from each other. He's become a bridge for difficult conversations — sitting quietly beside a student who needs a moment, giving everyone in the room permission to slow down.

The joy he brings to students spills over to the staff too. On the hard days, he's there for them as well.

One placement. One dog. A family that can move through the world together — and a school full of kids learning what it feels like to be gentle.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time dedicated to reducing stigma, educating the public, and supporting those living with mental health conditions. For our facility dog teams, all three happen naturally, every single day.

It doesn't always happen in a therapy office. It can happen in a hospital hallway, library, or break room. And the impact is just as real.

A scared little boy on a hospital floor finds his calm. A stressed student realizes he hasn't eaten in hours and lets himself take a break. A staff member who has been quietly struggling feels, for the first time in a while, like someone noticed.

Wherever our facility dogs go, barriers soften, conversations begin, and people find comfort, connection, and calm in moments when they need it most. The impact they make is powerful—and often deeply personal. Below, their handlers share, in their own words, what it’s like to witness that transformation every day.

"A little boy and his mom were in the hospital hallway, having an emotional moment on the floor. He was facing an upcoming medical appointment and was overwhelmed with fear. Woody walked right over, sat down beside him, and offered himself up as emotional support. "We were connecting with students during one of the most stressful times of the year. One student was in a corner of the library, visibly anxious, studying for an engineering final. Aiden wandered over and rested his head on his lap. The student melted into him, started talking, and eventually realized he'd missed lunch by two hours — taking Aiden's interruption as a cue to take a break. Art Unleashed Sneak Peek!

The Art Unleashed statues are making their debut on May 20 at Oakencroft Farm and Winery and it's your first chance to see them up close. Each statue has been uniquely painted by a local artist, with proceeds going toward building a dedicated facility for SDV. They'll be on display at Oakencroft through mid-June before heading out across Albemarle County and four other cities in Virginia in July.
