Serving Those Who’ve Served Us: Jonathan & SDV Remy

When Jonathan reached out to Service Dogs of Virginia in November 2024, he was searching for more than a service dog — he was looking for a way to navigate daily life again.

For years, he had served as a first responder in fire departments, law enforcement, and EMS, but the weight of those experiences took a toll. Crowds, travel, and even everyday social situations triggered intense stress and anxiety, and sleepless nights became routine. It was after enduring these challenges for so long that Jonathan received a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Determined to reclaim his independence, Jonathan began the journey toward a PTSD service dog. In August 2025, he was paired with Remy, who is specially trained to recognize the signs of anxiety and provide calm and comfort when they’re needed most.

Remy’s impact was immediate and deeply personal.

“I recently traveled to Duke to shadow a medical practice,” Jonathan shared. “This is the first time I’ve traveled alone without significant stress or anxiety.”

Now, with Remy by his side, Jonathan moves through life with renewed confidence. He brings Remy to work each day where they continue to grow as a team.

At home, Jonathan, his wife, and their daughter are embracing new adventures — more outings, more travel, and a deeper sense of peace.

And Remy? He’s found his forever home — a steadfast companion and Jonathan’s partner in every step forward.

Closing Out the Year With a New Beginning: SDV CJ

We’re delighted to share some joyful news as the year comes to a close — our final puppy of 2025 has arrived!
Please join us in welcoming SDV CJ to the pack!

CJ will be living with veteran puppy raiser Caryn, who will help guide him through his first year of learning, exploring, and growing into a confident future service dog.

This special pup carries an equally special name. CJ was named by the Holbrook Family Foundation, longtime supporters of SDV, in honor of a beloved cousin. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and the legacy of kindness that CJ will carry forward as he begins his journey to change a life.

Welcome, SDV CJ — we can’t wait to see who you’ll become!

Thank You for an Incredible 2025

What an incredible year — and it’s all thanks to you! Your support has fueled growth, hope, and life-changing outcomes across Virginia.

But the best is yet to come. In 2026, we’ll be launching new training initiatives, more volunteer opportunities, and beginning the first phases of a long-awaited new facility. Big things are on the horizon — and we can’t wait to share the journey with you.

Happy holidays from our entire team — and here’s to an amazing year ahead!
