READing with Service Dogs

Reaching Potential

R.E.A.D. is a program pioneered by Intermountain Therapy Animals in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it is achieving amazing results in improving reading skills in young children.

At risk readers develop confidence and have fun by reading to dogs who listen quietly, do not pass judgment, and enjoy the interaction. It's a proven tool to help motivate kids and creates an enjoyable reading atmosphere.

Our service dogs in training are perfect for this role and we have launched our own READing program.

SDV participates in a reading program at Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, Burley Middle School, Western Albemarle High School and Rockfish Gap Elementary school in which low-achieving readers read aloud to one of our dogs.
